It’s always Mom

A Journey of Weight Loss: Part 3

It’s been two weeks. I looked down on the scale and the figure told me that I only lost about 2 kilos. Well, 2 kg…..it’s almost nothing. Everyone can lose 2 kilos just by going to toilet for a couple of times without making any effort on diet or exercise :-) And, anyone can gain 2 kilos just by eating a little bit more than s/he usually does in one meal.

Then I started to play with all the morning and evening numbers of my weight. I even made a funky column chart. I looked at it and amazingly found that it’s actually showing a pleasant tendency to go somewhere, as those 2 kgs are not something that I thought would easily bounce back or quite depends upon what’s eaten.

I thought the hardest time is the first a couple of days. But I was wrong. After the first and second day, the body actually got used to the way how it intakes food and reacts to less food. You feel that you actually don’t really need so much to eat anymore. However, after one week’s time, when your body is really low, your desire awakes. You want to eat something yummy but when you look at the scale, you actually find that your weight didn’t really go down as much as you thought it should do. Then you start to question yourself, “is this working? and is all the sacrifice worth?” Then this is your hardest time. And this is the time to determine who’s going to travel the path of successful weight loss and who’s not.

The key? Keep going when you feel like a stop, and persist in what you are doing when it seems there is no hope.

Ready for Xmas?

We took a collective photo for all staff working in the office so we can send out a Xmas newsletter to clients. The silly part was that we all wore the red and white Santa hats…. Well, I guess my feeling about that is silly but fun. I did enjoy it unless it was a bit too warm for my head.

I actually liked the idea of white fluffy angel ring head band much better than this one. But I did check in Spotlight Party shop last year to find the thing but didn’t see it. I might go to have a look again this year. It seems a kind of kido stuff and a waste of money, but you gotta have something to cheer yourself up at this moment of a year, and sometimes being silly is neccessary to achieve that.

Well, I can’t believe that it’s the time to put the Xmas tree up. I need to do it over this weekend. I keep asking myself “where has my year gone?” And the next question is, “did I achieve anything this year?” Oops, I am feeling a bit of frantic now :-)

Home-made Nuts Bars

Missing Chinese snacks? Try this yummy nuts bar recipe. It won’t take you anything to make it, but it gives you so much more than satisfaction of eating it. What’s going to turn out in your kitchen would be something that you thought you would never be able to make yourself in the past. But look at the picture, how prefessional the job has been done by me and my husband!!! God, we are good!

The original recipe was from Carolyn, a Singapore Chinese lady who works for the same department of ANU as my husband does. She used more black sesame seeds and only peanuts in her recipe. But it’s open to be modified to your taste. You can use whatever the nuts that you love and adjust the amount of honey and sugar to achieve the level of sweetness right to your taste buds.

Now let’s do it. You will need:
Cooked peanuts (no skin) crushed;
Cooked crushed walnuts;
25g black cooked sesame seeds;
5 table spoons of any sort of honey;
2 table spoons of sugar .

Prepare a shallow tray lined with baking paper. Then sit a fry pan on medium heat, melt honey and sugar, then stir in all the nuts until they combine really well. Spoon the mixture out to the tray. Make the top flat with a spoon and press to make the mixture tightly held in the pan.

Set aside to cool down, but cut it to desired size (bar size or cubic) when it’s slightly warm. Then put the cut bars into refrigerator for one hour to set. Haha, it’s done. Take some for your tomorrow’s morning tea break and share them with your colleagues. They would love you:-)

Note: make sure you cut it before it goes into the refrigerator, otherwise you won’t be able to do it properly later than that. Also, they can be stored in a container in refrigerator for about one month.

Bridget Pom Pom Hat

I don’t know why Wormhead called it “Bridget“, but just like what she suggested in her website, it’s quick to knit and fun to wear, which did remind me Renee’s cute but chubby image in that movie “Bridget Jones Diary”.

It’s basically a one-piece tube thing with 5×5 rib pattern to be worked on 4 dpns. And there is no increasing and decreasing required, almost a perfect project for mindless knitting.

However the result is dramatic and unique. When we are getting sick of those boring crowned hats, this is absolute something you would need to kill a long long cold winter, yet remain your personality.

I actually knitted this baby blue hat for my niece with two strands of 4 ply yarn, even I have no idea how I am going to give it to my niece in China before the winter’s gone in Beijing. I did try on myself. The thing I found out after that is, pom pom is not something only for kids. It can bring so much more to a person’s style and change her whole facial even body expressions, which is a good knitting pattern that is supposed to embrace.

I love it very much and might use to make another one in the future.

Reverse Parking

I spent quite a few hours today practising reverse parking. My husband had developed a theory called DMTTto help me turn this most difficult driving skill to absolute an easy piecy. The name DMTT is an abbreviation of 4 reference points at different stages:

  • First try to park the car as close as possible to the reference car in a paralleled way;
  • Full lock to left turn to reverse the car until Driver seat is aligned with the right tail of the reference car;
  • Then full lock to right turn to reverse the car until the left Mirror is aligned with the right tail of reference car;
  • Then full lock to left turn to reverse the car until the Tail of the car gets close to the kerbside;
  • Then right turn the wheel to reverse the car until the left Tyres of the car is parallel to the kerb.
  • Subtly adjust to make sure the distance between the car to the reference car in front is approriate.

Does it make sense? I tried many times, including on different reference cars which parked at different places, including night time in the main street of Queanbeyan. It had never failed, even it was performed by me, a person who has never tried it before and had just started to learn how to do reverse parking from today.

What are your tips for reverse parking?
