The paper rose that rocks

Well, I admit that my mind is too busy and I just can’t allow it to be idle.

Recently I found quite a number of pretty things made of paper. Many of them are very practical to do it yourself at home and would be a great decoration to add a bit of touch into your daily life.

I highly recommend this one — paper rose I found at dozidesign. She has written up a detailed tutorial to show you how to make them. I had so much fun making them myself. It’s easy, cheap but so beautiful. It’s a décor that costs you almost nothing but would last forever. Read the rest of this entry »

Read the rest of this entry »

For Hubby: Chef’s Hat

Recently hubby has been spending a lot of time in the kitchen……making food for us……which I really appreciated it very much :-)

The thing I am concerned the most is, how can he protect his hair from an often oily and smoky Chinese kitchen environment as we have realised that this is most of time the case.

I always have my cooking hat on while cooking, which is a knitted slouchy beret and can hide all my long hair underneath a very large undercover. But what about him? Bare head with short hair, I wondered if this is good enough…… not just for his personal image, also for the sake of the food that he cooks. Read the rest of this entry »

I am one of those little white mice

Two days ago, I went to the clinic and got my H1N1 vaccine done. Initially I thought I could have waited a bit longer then to bring it up until I see my doctor at the next appointment, but I supposed that it’s gotta be done anyway, so getting it done sooner would be better than getting it later.

So I made an appointment last Wednesday. It’s said that my doctor had approved me to do this. So I went there, then was told there was no record showing the approval. As a result of that, the nurses had to ask my doctor again.

I waited and waited, half an hour later, I saw my doctor came out of his office but apparently he was in the middle of chasing one of his patients who mysteriously disappeared for the time being. To be honest, my doctor is the one of the most busiest doctors I have ever seen in my life. He is everywhere, clinic, emergency room, hospital ward, and most of time it was after hours or after a surgery when he was still wearing a surgery cap. I often wondered if he ever sleeps, eats, spends time with his family or has ever been on a holiday. I think he works at least 15 hours a day from 7am to 10pm and for the rest of time, he is probably on call all the time.

Anyway, I got his permission finally after a bit of “Doctor Becker” type of scenarios. You know, doctors normally don’t recognise their patients very well when they are NOT in their office environment. I finally got my injection and was instructed to stay for a further 15 minutes in the clinic.

Another boring 15 minutes I waited, wondering if I would go into a shock or a sever allergy reaction or passing out or something. Nothing happened, and I was free to go. For the rest of that afternoon, I was fine, until late of that evening, I started to develop a bad headache.

I spent a whole night in my bed flipping over from one side to another, like a pie being cooked in a frypan. It was almost unbearable and the last time I had the same sort of level of pain was back to 10 weeks ago. I got up and tried to do something, but nothing really worked.

I eventually went back to the bed and prayed after another a couple of hours, it would be the early morning and headache will be gone and I will be back to normal.

Yes, it did happen though leaving me feeling very week in the morning, I suppose that is called “SIDE EFFECT”. Not sure if it’s caused by injection or it was just out of blue, or I was too stressed yesterday. I carefully checked all the documents that I could find in regards to H1N1 vaccine, it all suggested that it’s a safe practise for ordinary human being to take.

Two days later I am still here, despite feeling a bit sore around the injection area 24 hours afterwards. But it all cleared up now. No more dramas appeared to happen so far, and I can still feel some bubble balls being wheeled all around in there.

My husband said I am one of those “little white mice”——不小心当了一回小白鼠!

All From One Piece Of Fabric

I did mention that I bought some cotton fabric from Spotlight about 2 weeks ago. It was the last piece of fabric wrapping on a paper rod and it was certainly on sale. When I took the whole rod to the counter and asked to cut 1 meter for me, the lady who does the cutting and measurement quickly pulled the fabric out, then the rod fell off on the ground…well, there was only 95 cm left on that rod, and I didn’t know that before.

But, I was quite happy. 95cm is close enough. The only thing that I knew that I was going to make at that stage was just a baby kimono, but guess what? Now I have turned this piece of fabric into 3 different things, and after that, I’ve still got about 20cm long of fabric left. What can I complain?

BABY KIMONO

To me, the kimono is a second try project (see my 1st version here), so there is no problem. Believe it or not, this time I saved a hell lot of time as using ready-made bias tape, and the result is even more satisfying. I certainly recommend the pattern to everyone who wants to make a start for baby sewing.2009-10-172

BABY SUN DRESS

I absolutely love this pattern. Fabulous project for beginners!~ I couldn’t believe it’s so simple yet effective. Seriously there is not much sewing to do, except two seams and attaching the tape to the edges. The dress comes up quite cute, I can even imagine the little one having some smiley face wearing it in the sun.2009-10-173

BABY SUN HAT

Before you get sick of seeing all these little flowers-and-butterflies, I want to show you my last project that I came up. I didn’t plan this one until I saw The Fourth of July Baby Sun Hat from Purlbee. It’s perfect! I immediately decided that I have to have this one in my sewing list. 2009-10-18Of course it’s important to have a hat to protect from sun burn, surely it’s a must-have accessory in a baby’s wardrobe, but you are kidding me, right? Who cares?:-) It’s fun to me, and that’s enough. I don’t know what other people think. Sometimes people make things as they experiment on stuff.

Because I’ve got plenty of fabric left, so I used it both for lining and outside, and it really works well! The only part I altered a bit was the width of the tape I used. I couldn’t bother to get 18mm bias tape, so I still used this 12mm one. A little narrower, but if you sew carefully enough, it will do the job, catching both sides of the tape edges as well as the fabric in between.

Then, what’s the next? What’s missing in the picture? What else can I make with only 20 cm fabric? I am sure I will come up with some ideas!

A Little Thought ON Overtaking Theory

I was stuck behind a very slow caravan on a two-ways road to Cooma. The caravan was moving ridiculously in about 70-80ks per hour on the road of 100ks/ph, and there was already a long queue after it and before my car.

I can see almost everyone behind that caravan intended to make an overtaking action, but because the traffic from the opposite side kind of was non-stopping, it needs guts (probably more a good judgement as well as the good time) to make sure any move would be perfectly safe.

So for about 30 minutes, there was no change of order on this lane at all. People got very impatient now, but what can you do? Rush out of the lane, press accelerator quickly to make it a speed of 130ks/ph and when passing by the caravan, give that horrible hand gesture?

I knew I was a bit late, not terribly, but it certainly would take much longer time for me to reach my destination. Really, because of my current life status, I really had no intention to make an overtaking, as I think I can wait and just strolling on the road with 70ks/ph was surely not that bad as bumping to a car from the opposite side. I eventually will get there and it would be just a matter of arriving there 15 minutes earlier or later.

But it got me thinking as this is actually a very interesting scene if you think about it. Let me give you a picture of what’s happening by numbering all the cars involved in this action. Say there are 6 cars, caravan is No.1, then there is No2, No.3….and I am the No.6. Between every two cars, there is only very little distance.

Now here is a theory. Whose responsibility to make the first overtaking action? It certainly won’t be No.4 to No.6, as they have more vehicles to go pass and much longer distance to make an overtaking to get to the top position, and it means the risk would be much greater than it would be for No. 2.

So the first overtaking action would be ideal if it’s taken by car No.2, or maybe No.3 depending on the situation. However, if No.2 or No.3 doesn’t comfortable to do so, it means that nothing is going to change.

So, now you know what happened over the time while I was there on that road. None of the Car No.2 and Car No.3 made a movement; neither did rest of the cars. But you can’t really complain, not to that stupid caravan, as it’s his (her) decision to make if s(he) wants to travel over the speed limit or in a position of making a traffic delay, and neither to any of car No.2 or No.3, as maybe there was never a good timing or safe gap for them to make a move, or they simply don’t want to make a move. Of course you have no right to blame car No.4 to No.6, as we are the most innocent victims.

The only thing we can do is “cursing” that caravan or whoever we want to curse. But seriously, shouldn’t it be the time for Road Authority to think about adding more overtaking lanes on this road for every 5-10 kilometres?
